As the blood flows past the tissues it provides them with oxygen and glucose whilst picking up carbon dioxide. The tissues need oxygen and glucose for respiration whilst carbon dioxide is the waste product of this process, so is taken from the tissues into the blood by diffusion. From here the blood is taken to the lungs where the carbon dioxide is excreted into the atmosphere and more oxygen picked up by the haemoglobin.
